Emergence Medicine Department (EMD provides services for acutely ill patients with a potentially life threatening conditions. The EMD aims to stabilize critically ill patients and manage them for a maximum of 24 hours before referral to an inpatient ward, intensive care, outpatient clinic or medical evacuation if possible for further diagnostic and treatment.

1.1 Organization:

The EMD has a main unit with triage, treatment and resuscitation areas, Mass causality area and an Emergency Operating Theater. The main unit has a total of ____ nurses, ____ Registrars, _____ Residents, ____ Emergency medicine specialists,_____ Super specialist and______ Health Attendants.

The Emergency Operating Theater has _____ Nurses and______Health Attendants with specialist anesthesiologists and surgeons rotating from the MNH departments. Training programs for all staff are ongoing and visiting foreign Emergency physician and nurse providers (from sweden)are present as mentors and faculty in the department.

1.2 Core Functions:

1.2.1 Triage Area

  1. To receive referral and emergency cases.
  2. To collect data and rapidly assess patient condition in order to prioritize and initiate appropriate care.
  3. Transfer patients to the appropriate EMD area, treatment or resuscitation.
  4. In non-emergency cases, send patients to the cold casualty or Out-patient department.

1.2.3 Treatment Area.

  1. To treat priority and queue patients; patients with conditions that are not immediately life threatening but must be attended within 24hours.
  2. Patients will receive a doctor consultation, nursing care and interventions according to priority.
  3. Additional investigations may be ordered and initiated.
  4. Specialist consultations, in addition to Emergency, may be called in the EMD depending on patient condition.
  5. Patients’ admitted to appropriate ward or discharged with follow-up instructions according to their condition.

1.2.4 Resuscitation Area.

  1. To treat emergency patients with immediately life-threatening conditions.
  2. Patients receive a doctor consultation and nursing care and interventions immediately.
  3. Additional investigations may be ordered and initiated.
  4. Specialist consultations, in addition to Emergency, may be called in the EMD depending on patient condition .
  5. Patients’ transferred to operating theater, admitted to appropriate ward or discharged with follow-up instructions according to their condition

1.2.5 Mass causality area.

  1. To receive all the causalities from the site of accident .
  2. To triage all the causalities and channel them to appropriate sites.
  3. To act as an overflow site for patients that are in treatment.

1.2.6 Emergency Operating Theatre.

  1. To provide minor and major surgical services for patients with emergency surgical needs from the EMD
  2. Observe and care for patients through the post-surgical recovery period.
  3. To transfer patients to the Ward.
